Manufacturing
The mature leaves of Gymnema sylvestre are harvested to start the manufacturing process of Gymnema Extract - 25%. The leaves are thoroughly cleaned, dried, and then ground into a fine powder. This powder is extracted with a solvent to release bioactive ingredients such as gymnemic acids. Gymnema extract is concentrated in the resultant solution to a 25% concentration, and quality control tests are performed to guarantee potency and purity. Standardization is optional and carried out for constant concentrations. After filtering, the final result is a concentrated, standardized Gymnema extract that can be used in several ways.
Applications
G. sylvestre is known by the Hindi word gurmar, which means "sugar destroyer." This is due to a substance found in gymnema leaves called gymnemic acid, which dulls the taste of sugar. There is some evidence that suppressing the taste of sugar could help treat diabetes.
Geographical Specifications
Native to the tropical forests of central and southern India, sylvestre is widely distributed in thickets at altitudes of 0.3 to 0.7 km, scrub forests, and plains from the coast. There are about forty species in the genus Gymnema, which are found in western Africa and Australia.
